Career frequency 96.0
For more than two decades, I have dedicated my career to broadcast engineering, technology and innovation. My passion for radio began long before my first professional role. Growing up around studios, transmitters and broadcast equipment gave me an appreciation for both the technical precision and the creativity required to deliver outstanding radio. That early exposure developed into a lifelong commitment to designing technology that enables broadcasters to perform at their very best.
The full story
Today I work as a Senior Broadcast Architect and Technology Specialist, leading projects that strengthen broadcast infrastructure, improve operational resilience and enhance the listener experience. My expertise spans studio design, IP networking, transmission systems, audio processing, broadcast automation, disaster recovery, systems integration, cybersecurity and strategic technology planning. I enjoy taking complex technical challenges and transforming them into reliable, practical solutions that support both people and business.
My career has provided the opportunity to work with several of South Africa’s leading commercial broadcasters. During sixteen years at Classic FM I progressed through engineering and technical management roles, gaining experience across virtually every aspect of radio broadcasting. I later led the technical implementation and launch of Hot 102.7 FM and Star 91.9 FM, overseeing the design and deployment of both stations and successfully bringing them on air on the same day. It remains one of the proudest achievements of my career.
I currently serve at Gagasi FM, where I have been responsible for a number of significant technical initiatives, including the design of satellite studios, disaster recovery facilities, enterprise networking projects and major broadcast infrastructure upgrades. One of the most rewarding projects was leading the implementation of KwaZulu-Natal’s first commercial MPX over IP transmission network, improving audio quality, operational reliability and overall network performance across the station’s transmission infrastructure.
Although engineering has always been my primary discipline, I have a strong interest in the broader creative and digital landscape. I have developed skills in website development, graphic design and digital content creation, and I produce and release original instrumental music under the artist name Gareth David on the major streaming platforms. I believe the future of broadcasting lies in successfully combining technology, creativity and digital innovation into a single, seamless experience.
Professional development has always been important to me. I completed Business Management through the University of Cape Town and later achieved a SETA Recognition of Prior Learning qualification in Radio Station Management. These qualifications complement more than twenty years of practical experience and have strengthened my ability to contribute at both technical and strategic levels within modern broadcast organisations.
Throughout my career I have worked alongside many talented broadcasters, engineers and industry leaders. Those experiences have reinforced one belief above all else. Great radio is never created by one person. Every successful station depends on presenters, producers, engineers, journalists, programmers, sales teams, digital specialists, finance professionals and management working together towards a common purpose. My role has always been to build the technology that allows those people to do their best work.
As the broadcasting industry continues to evolve through IP infrastructure, cloud technologies, artificial intelligence and increasingly connected workflows, I remain passionate about helping broadcasters embrace innovation while preserving the qualities that have always made radio unique. My goal is simple. To design broadcast environments that are reliable, forward thinking and built to serve both audiences and the people behind the microphone.
